Microsoft Security Essentials
Every Windows user needs to think about security. The first layer of security for your computer should be a fully updated and configured antivirus application. I see many users fail to use antivirus properly either because they never thought about installing it or they have let their subscription expire.
This is why I recommend free antivirus software for home users. Not only does it save you money, but you never have to worry about a lapse in coverage because of an expired subscription. There are a few options in the free antivirus world such as AVG Free and avast! Home Edition but the option I am really excited about is Microsoft’s Security Essentials.
Security Essentials was just released to the public last month. What impresses me most is how unobtrusively it operates. SE rarely nags you for updates or to run scans and when it does scan, it completes quickly and without slowing down your other work too much. As it is a Microsoft product, you know that it will work with Windows well and that the developer will be around to support it.
You can download SE from Microsoft
here. Installation is quick and easy but you will be required to validate your Windows installation.
One last note on security, there is a trick used by malware developers where they create fake antivirus software. You may have seen these under names like Antivirus 2009 or Antivirus 360. They typically report fake infection and then nag you to pay to have them removed. Be aware of these as removal can be time consuming and annoying. The best defense is to know what antivirus software you use, keep it updated, and don’t be fooled by scammers even if they look similar to real antivirus products. Good antivirus and common sense will keep you safe in almost any situation.
